Counsel to the Criminally Accused

James Coulter is counsel to people accused of criminal offences. He completed his Articles of Clerkship with a prominent and respected criminal defence law firm in Ottawa, Ontario. Since being called to the Bar in Ontario, he has defended people in all levels of Court - the Ontario Court of Justice, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in both jury- and judge-alone trials, and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. James  has also acted as solicitor at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Areas of Practice

James Coulter is a trial lawyer and believes in putting the state to their burden of proving a criminal offence has occurred. He practices exclusively in the area of defending persons accused of criminal offences.

James has secured acquittals after trial in all manner of criminal allegations, including impaired driving offences, sexual assaults, and committing internet-based offences against children.

Many more cases have been resolved in the complete withdrawal or stay of criminal charges through pre-trial applications before the Crown can even present their case. James has successfully had alleged drugs, firearms, proceeds of crime, and confessions, excluded from trial after extensive cross-examination and eliciting evidence of improper police conduct.
